Airport Sound Insulation
Aircraft noise affects several million people in the U.S., especially in locations closer to airports within approach and departure paths. Aircraft noise is of significant concern. Recognizing aircraft noise as a major environmental problem, airport owners have embarked on noise mitigation projects, using several sources of funding. Some are airline and airport generated, but many airports rely on funds from the federal airport improvement program (AIP).
Noise mitigation grants are part of AIP's role in helping pay for airport planning and development projects that enhance capacity, safety, and security and the mitigation of noise at airports included in the
FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.

Many U.S. airports provide noise mitigation projects in their local areas. For example in 1997 Los Angeles announced a program to provide soundproofing of 8,900 residences in the Los Angeles communities over a seven year period. Similar programs exist in several other U.S. cities. Although the vast majority of the work consists of replacing windows and doors with sound attenuating windows and doors in private residences, other structures are included such as schools, churches, and multi-family dwellings.
